Press Release

Delhi all set to experience a NO POWER CUTS ERA

·         Load-shedding in BSES area has decreased by a whopping 85 %

·         Reliability Index in BRPL and BYPL is a record 99.70 % and 99.78 %

·         Energy input in BSES area has increased by 9 %

·         Distribution Transformer failure has decreased by a record 92 %

Delhi’s electricity distribution system, on the eve of privatisation in July 2002, was in a state of complete disrepair. Frequent power cuts totalling for over 10 hours a day was routine. Power cuts sometimes lasted for hours together as the rate of distribution transformer failure was quite high. And above all, the concept of customer service simply did not exist.

Today 66 months later, the situation has done a complete turn-around. Delhi is all set to enter the NO POWER CUTS ERA. It’s power distribution system has witnessed tremendous improvement and its performance has been applauded by one and all.

Saying that over Rs 3500 crore has been invested to strengthen and augment the system – consisting of grid stations, power transformers, cables, feeders and meters, a BSES spokesperson said: “We are committed and determined to supply 24x7 quality and reliable electricity to all our honest consumers,” said a BSES official.

By reducing the AT&C loss reduction targets by around 5% year on year, as against the national average of around 1%, BSES discoms have not only over achieved their annual AT&C loss reduction targets, but also created a world record of sorts.

BSES’s distribution system today is operated on state-of-the-art next generation technology and is comparable to the best in the world. This is more than evident from the statistics below:

A Snap Shot (From 2002 onwards)

  • Peak Demand in Delhi has increased by 19%
  • Peak Demand in Delhi has increased by 18%
  • Load shedding in BSES area decreased by a whopping 85%
  • Energy input in BSES’ area has increased by 9%
  • DT failure in BSES’ area has decreased by a record 92%
  • BRPL and BYPL have reduced AT & C losses by a record 22% and 24% respectively
  • In addition, BRPL ‘and BYPL’ Reliability Index (ASAI) has reached a high of 99.70% and 99.78% respectively, from very abysmal records earlier

Even after a record 85% reduction in loadshedding in BSES area – some power cuts occur in a few pockets due to:

(i)                  Overdrawal by neignbouring states

(ii)               Dip in frequency levels

(iii)             Tripping/shutdown of generating stations

(iv)             Over loading of the distribution system (when connected load exceeds sanctioned load) and

(v)               Power theft

  • As BSES discoms have been given a stiff AT & C loss reduction targets, BSES is undertaking load shedding in high-theft prone areas on a rotational basis, so as to cause minimum inconvenience to customers. In such areas the theft is over 60 %. This is also in the interest of honest consumers and as part of BSES’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

BRPL – Some of the areas with over 60% power theft

Najafgarh, Jaffarpur,  Molarband Extn, Badarpur, Batla House, Okhla Vihar, Sarai Kale Khan, Hari Nagar, Ashram, Madangir,   Tughlakabad Extn, Sainik Farms, Bijwasan, Bhatti Mines, Saidullajab, Khirki Extn, Chandan Holla, Mundka Village, Ranhola, Bagdola, Hiran Kunda, Kamruddin Nagar, Peeragarhi, Syed Nangloi, Khyala, Nwada Vill, Matiyala Village and Kakrola Village

BYPL  – Some of the areas with over 60% power theft

Sonia Vihar,Mustaffabad,Brijpuri,Jawahar Nagar,Chand Bagh, Seelampur, Zaffrabad, Chuhan, Bangar, Brahampuri, Noor-e-Illahi, Ghonda Village, Gamri,  Gokul puri, Mondoli, Saboli, Sunder Nagari, Nand Nagari, Ashok Nagar, Meet Nagar, Njata Colony, Zaffrabad, Kodhi colony Tahirpur Old and New Seemapuri, Old Seelampur, Kanti Nagar, Subhas Mohalla, Gandhi Nagar, Shanti Mohalla,

  • In these power theft areas also, BSES is investing hundreds of crores in streamlining its distribution network by adopting state-of-the-art technologies like the insulated Aerial Bunched Cables, HVDS , LVDS etc – and making it difficulty for power thieves to steal from its network.

“Consumers are requested to have their loads enhanced and avoid overdrawl of their sanctioned load”, said a BSES official, adding, “Customers are also requested to be vigilant against those who steal power. Around 30 % of electricity was still being stolen, the official urged all honest consumers to alert BSES against those who steal power. Together we can make Delhi a load shedding free zone

BSES, Delhi’s premier power distribution company, is committed to ensuring quality and reliable electricity supply to all its consumers.
